FALL ….. my FAVORITE time of year!!!!! Though it is 80 degrees here today, the leaves ARE turning, and we have had a few days of traditional fall weather! BEAUTIFUL fall here in Ohio so far!!!!
I found this knit piece (too short for a dress, and too tight under the arms for a top), which I decided to use for this project. Look how FRUMPY it looks on me to begin with!!!
VEST it is !!! Long vests are IN right now, so I wanted to make one for myself!!!
I began by deciding how wide I wanted my shoulder seams, since I needed to cut away the capped sleeve on this top/dress.
I marked a spot on each shoulder at 3 1/2 inches from the neck edge, then layed down my French curve about an inch below the armpit up to the mark on the shoulder seam.
I marked this curve with pins, since I could not use my purple pen on this fabric.
Using my serger, I serged the knit right along my pinned line, removing pins as I sewed.
After that, I steamed and ironed the serged seams to get them to lay flat. (Knits tend to stretch as you sew them.)
Then I turned about 1/2 inch of these new armhole seams to the inside, and hand stitched them.
Next it was time to open the front. Not wanting the knit to ravel when I cut it, I sewed two straight lines on either side of the center front of the top/dress. This I have marked with my two purple pens.
Time to cut the knit right between the lines of stitching.
Using this black stretchy elastic . . .
I measured the amount I would need (allowing a little at the top and bottom to fold over). I measured TWO lengths of this elastic the SAME so that both sides of my vest would be equal. (If you just attached the elastic as you sewed along, one side might end up longer than the other!)
Next, I pinned the elastic to each side of the front.
Then, using a wide zig-zag stitch . . .
I sewed the elastic to the front of each side of my new vest!
ALL DONE in just these few steps! See how easily and quickly you can create a new piece for your wardrobe!
See my NEXT post for how to create a scarf like this one I made to go with my new vest!
With a BELT . . .
WITHOUT a belt . . .
With a SCARECROW . . . HAPPY FALL!!!
