Last week, a friend of mine asked me if I could create some items from old denim jackets of her daughter’s. Her daughter had worn these coats for years, but has no particular use for them now. So, we decided that a pillow and a large bag might give these two coats some new life!
The coats are basically identical, but one is larger than the other. I used the smaller one for the pillow.
Knowing what size I needed, I purchased a pillow form measuring 14″ x 14″ at JoAnn Fabrics. I began by making a basic cut on the coat, larger than the exact area I would be needing.
I ironed it to help smooth it out.
I measured, and marked the size I would need, being careful to center the writing and create a square. I made this square 14 1/2″ x 14 1/2″, giving me 1/4″ seams on my serger. This would make my final size exactly 14″ x 14″ to fit the pillow.
I cut out my square.
Deciding I would use a couple of the tabs from the coat on the pillow, I removed the tabs.
I placed them at equal spots along the top edge of the pillow.
Then sewed them to the top edge.
Since it is not possible to remove the studs they attach to denim, I had purchased some buttons which look similar to the studs.
I sewed a button in the center of both of the tabs.
Next, I layed out the fabric for the back of my pillow, and marked my 14 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ square.
Then, putting right sides together, I pinned the front to the back.
I then sewed around the square, leaving an opening along the bottom, where I would insert my pillow form.
I then turned the pillow cover right side out, and stuffed the pillow into the cover.
It then looked like this.
I carefully folded the open edge closed at the bottom and pinned.
Then hand sewed the opening shut.
This fun memorable pillow is not complete … here’s the back.
And here’s the front …. how cute it this to memorialize all those hours spent at the dance studio!!!!! Let those memories LIVE ON !!!!!
Do YOU have something special you could “memorialize” for yourself, a child, or a special friend?
